(Name changed to protect confidentiality)

Course Description:

The Business Management/Administrative Assistant program is a 9 month course designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in administrative support positions in business. An integral part of the course is development of keyboarding skills through individual practice using the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing software; industry standards for entry-level position is a minimum keyboarding speed of 35 words per minute.

Student Description:

Ms. Gonzalez is a female aged approximately 20 years. She appears to be normally developed both physically and mentally. Ms. Gonzalez’ first language is Spanish; she is able to speak and read English. She desires to work as a secretary.

Problem Description:

After three months in the course, Ms. Gonzalez keyboarding speed is below 20 words per minute. She has been told that this is unacceptable, and that the appropriate method for developing speed is practice of 30 minutes daily.

Instructional Strategy:

Ms. Gonzalez has again been advised of the minimum acceptable keyboarding speed of 35 words per minute and to achieve that goal she must practice 30 minutes daily. To help Ms. Gonzalez monitor her daily practice, she will write down the time she starts and finishes her practice sessions. (The instructor will discreetly note the start and end times as well.) Each week the instructor will meet with Ms. Gonzalez to review her practice records and her progress toward the minimum acceptable keyboarding speed.
