Memorandum

All images for this assignment were generated using an Olympus D-510 Zoom digital camera with 2.1 megapixel resolution. The camera has 3X optical zoom as well as manual zoom; it also has a QuickTime Movie mode. Images are stored on a 64 MB Smart Card. Because I did not purchase the camera new, I do not have the proprietary camera software (Camedia). Images are transferred to the computer by removing the Smart Card from the camera and inserting it in a Smart Card reader that connects to the computer via USB. The reader acts as a removable disk drive. Photos are transferred by cutting and pasting in a suitable location using the Windows Explorer utility that is part of the Windows operating system. The camera saves all images in .jpg format so conversion is not necessary. I used Microsoft Photo Editor 3.01 to manipulate the photos.

All images were taken in my classroom at Bryman College’s Whittier campus. The students agreed to have their photos taken for purposes of this assignment. I hope to use these photos in a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the school’s business program.

The first picture is of a student working at the computer. The original image measured 4.00 x 5.33 inches (419 KB). Using Microsoft Photo Editor, I selected only that part of the image that I wished to keep and cropped to that size (1.76 x 2.49 inches). It was saved in both .jpg (72 KB) and .gif (166 KB) formats.

The second image also measured 4.00 x 5.33 inches and the file size was 424 KB. The image was cropped in the same way as the first image. The new image size was 1.75 x 2.67 inches. I then used the rotate feature to flip the picture horizontally. The image was then saved in .gif (190 KB) and .jpg (84 KB) formats.

The third image is a photo of me (from about mid-thigh up) taken by a student. The original image measured 4.00 x 5.33 inches; the file size was 476 KB. I cropped the image to a head shot measuring 1.00 x 1.24 inches and saved it in .gif (50 KB) and .jpg (25 KB) formats.
