EVOC 501 – WR1 List of Resources

The purpose of the WR1 Assignment was to prepare a list of resources that would be appropriate for the course I teach in Introduction to Information Processing. The following six criteria were specified:

  1. Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Reports.
  2. Emulate the Fred Fudrucker example for FORMAT, but include your own CONTENT.
  3. Provide a brief WRITTEN COURSE DESCRIPTION for a particular course that you could instruct, do instruct, or have instructed.
  4. List FIVE instructional resources in a standard BIBLIOGRAPHIC FORMAT that could be used in support of that course.
  5. Include at least one WEB SITE and one BOOK in the list.
  6. Immediately following each resource listed, provide a brief one or two sentence NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION of that resource.

The following sources of information were used relative to this assignment:

  1. Spurlock, Denise – From my own professional experience.
  2. Henderson, Jeffrey – Business Program Director at Bryman College’s El Monte campus. Mr. Henderson is A+ Certified and for several years worked in technical support for a financial institution. He has taught computer applications for five years.

I believe that the attached report meets all six of the above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.

LIST OF FIVE RESOURCE MATERIALS:

Parsons, June Jamrich, and Oja, Dan. (2002) Computer concepts, fourth edition. Boston: Course Technology.

This book is a good source of information on basic computer topics, including technical information regarding various hardware and software.

Beskeen, David W., et al. (2001)  Microsoft Office 2000, illustrated enhanced edition. Boston: Course Technology.

This book provides step-by-step instructions for using various features of the Windows 98/2000 operating systems, as well as Microsoft Office 2000.

How Stuff Work’s Computer Channel (as of January 22, 2004) http://www.howstuffworks.com/category.htm?cat=Comp

This site has good, easy-to-understand explanations of the technical workings of computers.

Webopedia – Online Dictionary for Computer and Internet Terms (as of January 22, 2004)

http://www.webopedia.com/

An excellent resource for definitions related to technology.

Moore, Leanne (producer) and Burke, Martin (director). (1999). Pirates of silicon valley [Movie]. Burbank, CA: Warner Home Video.

This “made for TV” movie is an enjoyable way to learn about the development of the personal computer, the Macintosh and Windows operating systems, and the rivalry between Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple Computer’s Steve Jobs.
