SYSTEM FOR EVALUATION OF STUDENTS

Introduction

Students in the Business Management program at Bryman College are being trained for entry-level administrative positions. In addition to learning the theory and practice of business, they are expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate in the business world. Each course in the 9-month program last 4 weeks. Students are graded on a weekly basis in four areas: participation, assignments, tests, and keyboarding. Points are awarded in each area for a maximum of 100 points per week. The course grade is the average of the four weekly grades.

Participation (20 points)

Students start with 20 points per week for participation. The participation grade includes points for attendance, adherence to published dress code, and adherence to published code of conduct. Points are deducted daily in accordance with the following schedule:

Dress code infraction – 1 point lost

Code of conduct infraction – 1 point lost

Tardy or leaves early – 1 point lost

Absent with notification to instructor – 3 points lost

Absent without notification to instruction – 5 points lost

Assignments (30 points)

Students are provided with a list of assignments and due dates on a weekly basis. The number of assignments may vary from week to week, and the total points are divided equally among the assignments. Students are expected to complete all assignments, check against answer keys for accuracy, make necessary corrections, and submit assignments at the end of class on the scheduled due date. Each correct assignment submitted on time receives full credit; late or incomplete assignments receive half credit. Click here to see a sample assignment list.

Tests (45 points)

Students are tested weekly. Tests include multiple-choice questions (20 points) and a practical exercise (25 points). Students who earn less than 18 points on the practical exercise may retake that portion of the test. Click here to see a sample test.

Keyboarding (5 points)

Students submit the results of a keyboarding test each week. Points are awarded on the following basis:

            0-19 words per minute – 1 point

            20-29 words per minute – 2 points

            30-39 words per minute – 3 points

            40-49 words per minute – 4 points

            50+ words per minute – 5 points

Grades

Students are provided with a weekly grade according to the following schedule:

            90-100 points – A

            80-89 points – B

            70-79 points – C

            Below 70 points – F

Course grades are based on an average of the four weekly grades.

UPGRADE INDICATOR:  This assignment has helped me define the criteria upon which student grades are based. In the future, I would like to develop a rubric for assessing assignments that will better address student competencies.
